We have been taught, in the name of familiar dissociation to try to control those we love, by manipulating and shaming them, to try to get them to do the ‘right’ things – in order to protect our own self worth. Our emotional experience of familiar love is of something controlling: “I love you if you do what I want you to do.” Our emotional experience of love is of something that is shaming and manipulative and abusive, and so we learn to dissociate escaping into a fantasy world.
