Dissociation is at the root and branch of all our problems. As well as switching off from distress, we who have the condition develop fragments of different identities and habits during times of dissociation. As the traumas keep happening, so the identities keep developing. It can be thought of as a survival strategy which helps us cope with severe trauma again and again. Once our mind has learned to cope by using dissociated identities, it keeps on doing so, even into adulthood when the traumas have stopped.

We know that, when we are faced with trauma, the distress it causes can become too much for our minds to take in. Rather than being overwhelmed, our mind can automatically switch into a different way of thinking and feeling. This is called being Dissociated. Dissociation is method of managing extreme feelings. It can happen automatically, without us meaning to dissociate. We become habituated to dissociation.
